Realtek Communications Network and Multimedia IC Solutions to Enable Digital Living

2004/05/31 Realtek full-line digital living solutions to be showcased at Computex-Taipei 2004

Hsinchu, Taiwan – May 31, 2004 – One of the world's leading network and multimedia IC providers, Realtek Semiconductor Corp., will demonstrate its newly developed communications network and multimedia IC products at booth D210, Hall 1, Computex-Taipei, June 1 – 5. The new communications and multimedia ICs may be combined to build competitive and economical devices with multiple combinations of features that enable construction of the digital home and offer the convenience of ubiquitous audio/video entertainment and information.

Realtek's communications network solutions for the digital home include:

  • Gigabit Ethernet Single-Chip Controllers (RTL8110SBL & RTL8169SBL)
  • Gigabit Ethernet Switch Controller (RTL8326)
  • IEEE 802.11a/b/g Dual-Band Triple-Mode WLAN Chipsets (RTL8185L, RTL8187L, RTL8225, and RTL8255)
  • Wireless Access Point/Gateway/Router SoC (RTL8181L, RTL8650SB)

Amongst the multimedia solutions are:

  • 7.1-Channel High Definition Audio Codecs (ALC880 & CMI9880)
  • Flat Panel Display Controller (RTD2523)
  • Card Reader Controller (RTS5101)

With these solutions, Realtek will model and demonstrate a digital multimedia home at the Computex show.

"With the increasing amount of digitalization and integration within the home, we see a need to build a bridge between all aspects of communications, networking, and entertainment. Digitalization allows for greater control and convenience in all aspects of the modern home", said Jessy Chen, Vice President of Realtek Semiconductor. "As technology becomes increasingly essential to everyone, we are dedicated to providing our customers with the products they need to build powerful solutions".

Realtek's networked home combines wired and wireless applications. In addition to broadband transmission enabled by the company's Gigabit Ethernet Controller and Switch solutions, Realtek will highlight wireless communications applications using Realtek's new series of WLAN chipsets and Wireless Access Point (AP)/Gateway/ Router SoCs, as follows:

  • IEEE 802.11b/g WLAN card/module: RTL8185L + RTL8225
  • Media/game adapter: RTL818L + RTL8185L
  • Broadband gateway/router: RTL8185L + RTL8225 + RTL8650B

Using an advanced all-CMOS process, the new Realtek dual-band triple-mode WLAN chipsets include:

  • Integrated IEEE 802.11a/b/g BBP/MAC (RTL8185L)
  • Integrated IEEE 802.11a/b/g BBP/MAC with USB 2.0 Interface (RTL8187L)
  • IEEE 802.11b/g RF Transceiver (RTL8225)
  • IEEE 802.11a/b/g RF Transceiver (RTL8255)

The WLAN chipsets feature low power consumption, high integration, high performance, high adaptability, and compact package size, providing the most competitive WLAN total solutions for the industry. Implemented with Realtek's RTL8181L or RTL8650B, the new WLAN chipsets provide ideal solutions for media adapter, wireless AP, gateway, and router applications, as well as for WLAN cards or modules.

The RTL8181L, integrating five chips (two Fast Ethernet MACs, an IEEE 802.11b BBP/MAC integrated Controller, a 200MHz RISC CPU, and a Memory Management Unit) into one single chip, provides a highly economic wireless AP/gateway SoC solution.

The RTL8650B, a gateway SoC equipped with a 200MHz RISC microprocessor, provides five UTP ports and an MII interface. It supports L2/L3/L4 data switching, Hardware Firewall, QoS, and VPN Crypto. When combined with WLAN solutions, the RTL8650Bss embedded Realtek proprietary WLAN-Acceleration technology supports high IEEE 802.11 multi-band transmission throughput.

Multimedia solution highlights will include:

  • Intel's next-generation audio specification High Definition Audio (HDA) codecs (ALC880 and CMI9880), for 7.1 channel high-end audio systems
  • Flat Panel Display Controller (RTD2523) for large-size LCD monitors
  • USB 2.0 Card Reader Controller (RTS5101) for high-performance card readers

Greatly upgrading PC sound quality, the Realtek HDA codecs deliver comparable playback quality to consumer electronic audio devices. Adopting Dolby Laboratories latest digital audio technology, the new PC audio solutions advance PC sound playback and enable PCs to fully support emerging digital formats and devices. With bandwidth support up to 192kHz sampling rate, the Realtek audio solutions make it possible for the PC to become the media platform of home theater/entertainment applications by supporting multi-channel and high-quality audio formats such as DVD-Audio.

The Realtek Flat Panel Display Controller, the RTD2523, is embedded with a high-performance ADC with support up to SXGA. Integrating DVI/Video8 input interfaces, LVDS/RSDS/TTL output interfaces, and a TCON, the Realtek RTL2523 simplifies LCD monitor design and reduces system costs. In addition, the all-in-one chip can be used for design of portable DVD, car TV, and multi-function monitors.

The RTS5101 is a high-performance 8-in-1 card reader controller supporting access to CompactFlash™ (CF), MicroDrive, Memory Stick™ (MS), Memory Stick PRO™ (MS-PRO), SecureDigital™ (SD), MultiMediaCard™ (MMC), SmartMedia™ (SM), xD-Picture Card™ (xD), and NAND Flash Memory. A built-in high-speed USB 2.0 device controller provides a 480Mbps transfer rate. Conforming to the USB Mass Storage Class Specification, the RTS5101 provides "plug and play" convenience without any driver installation.

The Realtek digital living solutions will be exhibited at Booth D210, Hall 1, Computex-Taipei, Taipei World Trade Center, June 1 ~ 5.
